Scuba Diving – Getting Family And Friends Involved

Scuba Diving – Getting Family And Friends Involved

Scuba Diving Is An Incredible Experience To Share With Loved Ones

Enthusing about your latest dive to family and friends can often be met with some bored looking stares. It’s very hard to get across the sensations that we experience to others who’ve never tried. The feeling of weightlessness, the colours, the excitement of getting up close to some incredible creatures is very hard for non divers to comprehend. The only way around it is to get them to try.

Make Sure It’s What They Want

It may well sound like the perfect solution to you but to your friends/family it might not. Occasionally we come across people being coherced into scuba diving by their partner, it’s always pretty obvious to us. They’re looking for an excuse to bale from the start and it’s usually the poor old instructor who gets the blame.

Start them slow if you have your doubts. Snorkelling on good dive sites can peak their interest or probably the best solution is the PADI Discover Scuba Diving programme. A simple programme that doesn’t impede on a holiday and is neither cost, skill or theory intensive. Just a fun day out which will hopefully motivate them into really exploring our underwater world. Children can participate in this programme from 10 years of age.

If you feel they absolutely want to do it and share those magical moments with you then head straight in for the PADI Open Water to gain their first certificate.

Life Changing

A scuba diving family will have another 70% of the planet to explore. It will completely change your outlook on holidays. Exotic countries with great diving not only give you wonderful experiences underwater. You’ll be immersed in different cultures and visit stunning locations which would never even have been on your radar before diving.

A recent example for us was father and son team Mark and Lee Bailey from the UK. Mark (father) has been diving for over 20 years and would have loved for all of his children to get certified. After a try dive it became clear that only his son really had the enthusiasm. With enthusiasm comes a desire to learn and a determination to successfully complete all the required skills for the certificate. After easily passing and a few more days fun diving they were already discussing next years dive holiday. Fantastic locations such as Bali, Philippines and the Maldives – a little different from the two week break to the Costa Del Sol…

I've been enjoying the incredible marine life in our oceans for over 25 years. 13 years ago I became a PADI professional in Phuket, hoping to introduce as many people as possible to the incredible beauty of the seas.

Having been fortunate enough to dive all over south east and especially Thailand, I enjoy sharing my diving experiences and passion on this blog.

Originally from Bristol in the UK, I swapped the frigid waters of the North Atlantic for the warm tropical seas around Thailand and can confidently say that I wouldn't go back

Diving From Liveaboards Banned In The Similan Islands

If you're not a fan of diving from dinghies then we have some bad news for you. Diving directly from your liveaboards has now been banned. It's a move that is supposed to protect corals and marine life, personally I've never seen a liveaboard in the Similan Islands National Park go near a reef. Liveaboards will have to keep their distance from the dive site or use official mooring lines. The other reason touted is safety. A diver unfortuna [...]

Great Weather For Phuket Scuba Diving Amazing Local Dives

What Is The Best Phuket Diving Season?

We have two distinct scuba diving seasons in Phuket, imaginatively named low and high. The low season runs from mid May to mid October and high season the remainder of the year. The two seasons are governed by the monsoon winds that blow across South East Asia. It's fairly straightforward; in high season it blows from the east and low season from the west. Well let's start with the low season. The predominant west to east winds bring w [...]

avoiding seasickness Scuba Diving Health

How Do I Avoid Seasickness?

How do I avoid seasickness is a question we often get asked. Fortunately throughout the Phuket diving high season we're blessed with generally flat seas. Around the beginning of May we start to get a swell come in from the open ocean. Although for most this has little impact on your dive day, for those who get seasick it can be horrible but there are ways to avoid it. Not going to go too far into the science but essentially your brain [...]
