Snorkelling In Phuket With Local Dive Thailand

Snorkelling in Phuket can be a bit of a gamble but although Local Dive Thailand primarily looks after Phuket scuba divers we also offer a great service for non-divers and free divers. If we have snorkelers on the boat, usually they’re accompanying a certified diver family member or friend, it’s a great solution to keeping the whole group together rather than the diver going off for a trip alone.

Generally a dedicated snorkelling tour in Phuket involves being loaded on a cramped speedboat with up to thirty other passengers. Sure you’ll get to your destination faster but the whole trip will be spent staring at the person opposite you, if you’re lucky they’ll be at least aesthetically pleasing to look at if you’re unlucky they could start projectile vomiting as soon as you hit the first wave.

We’re travelling with small children who are just learning their way around open water. We had a professional guide attending every detail of our day. Boat was very spacious. Kids loved the bean bags to sleep on during transfers. Bigger boat is more suitable for smaller kids that would not necessarily like the noise and bumpy ride of the speedboats. Food & crew was great. Thanks also for saving my fin which I dropped from the boat by accident!Janne Hietala

What you can be sure of is that you won’t get an opportunity to witness the beautiful scenery or soak up the sun on your journey to the islands. On our boats it’s very different, you’ll get a nice relaxing journey to the snorkelling site. On the way you’ll be able to walk around the boat, have some breakfast, talk to your friends, lay out on the shaded outdoor area or on the top sun deck. We also have a generous indoor saloon on the lower deck and a small saloon on the middle deck for those who would rather sit inside. we have clean western style toilets that have been fitted with environmentally friendly septic tanks so that no waste goes on the dive sites, if you’ve ever tried using a toilet on a speedboat you’ll really appreciate this feature. We also have fresh water showers to hose of the salt water and a full medical kit with trained staff to assist in the unlikely event of an emergency.

Diving And Snorkelling Are Easy Both Easy From Our Phuket Boats

Diving And Snorkelling Are Easy Both Easy From Our Phuket Boats

When you get to the snorkelling site there will be a full safety brief, tips on making snorkelling easier, information on the marine life that you might see, and most importantly how to snorkel responsibly without damaging the marine environment or your good self. All conducted by a guide whose at least PADI Rescue Diver qualified. If you’re not a confident swimmer then you’re welcome to use a life jacket and our guide will accompany you all the way with a surface marker buoy and a safety flotation device. The more experienced and free divers can go off on your own but there will always be a member of our crew looking out for you.

In between locations there’ll be delicious food prepared by our on-board cook, and free flow of water, tea and coffee. Again you can find a spot to relax on our spacious boat and talk to your guide about the animals you’ve seen. On the way home, lay back and enjoy a cold beer or soft drink and enjoy the sedate cruise back to the pier.

Sails Up On The Junk Liveaboard In Thailand

The Junk

The June Hong Chian Lee is the most unmistakable Thailand liveaboard. A throwback to a bygone era she was converted from a merchant cargo vessel to this elegant liveaboard in 1997 and has since been an ever present in the Similan & Surin Islands. During green season (May – October) she offers short and very well priced overnight trips to the dive sites around Phuket and Phi Phi. We know her as the ‘Junk’ but don’t be fooled by the name, she is anything but. Stepping onboard the hardwood deck you immediately feel that you’ve made the right choice. She has starred in several Hollywood movies including James Bond’s The Man with the Golden Gun and Disney’s The Swiss Family R [...]

Enriched Air Nitrox Tanks Ready to go Diving In Phuket

PADI Enriched Air Nitrox

Enriched Air is by far the most popular PADI specialty course conducted in Phuket. Diving with nitrox gives you much more no decompression time than diving with normal air. In dive locations such as Phuket where we do 3 dives a day with 1hr surface intervals it's a particular useful skill to have. The Similan Island liveaboards can schedule up to 4 dives a day so we would absolutely recommend being nitrox certified before or during your trip. It's a straight forward course and now adapted to reflect modern diving with computers. The theory will only take a few hours of your holiday time and can even be conducted in full on a single dive tour. Once you've analysed your tank and lo [...]

A Titan Triggerfish Chomping On A Phuket Divers Fin Rare & Peculiar Critters

Titan Triggerfish – Phuket Diving Guides Nemesis

With a head that's 2/3rds of it's body mass, independently moving weird googly eyes and a set of teeth that wouldn't look out of place on a hyena, the titan triggerfish is not going to win any modelling contracts but they can add a little excitement to a dive. They're a very prominent fish on Phuket's reefs, signs of there activities are everywhere - deep excavations in the sand, broken corals, sea urchin spines scattered around and the odd digit or chunk of flesh from a diver are a sign of their presence and current disposition. Titan triggerfish (Balistoides viridescens) are the largest of the triggerfish family in the indo-pacific and grow up to 75cm in length (it appears mu [...]

Let’s Talk About Light & Diving

In various scuba diving courses, such as PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, Deep Diver and Underwater Digital Photographer you are taught about light (about colours). The concept is quite easy to grasp as your visual experience while diving is directly liked to it. In a nutshell, light is affected by the distance it travels underwater (depth and subject distance) and topside conditions (time of day, weather and surface conditions). So it is all about how much light goes in, and how far it has to go. The following graphic from Dive Photo Guide illustrates this concept nicely. You can see that some colours, such as red and orange, rapidly disappear when going through water. So, y [...]

Phuket Diving Trips – How it Works

I've dived in many places around the world and it's fair to say that scuba diving in Phuket differs greatly from anywhere else I've experienced. Most of the best diving spots in the world are fairly remote with limited infrastructure but Phuket is very different negating the necessity of staying in a dive resort or very close to the boat departure point. As a result divers come from all over the island to join us, so if you're wondering how it works read on... The time varies depends on where you're staying (see below) but will be between 06:30 - 08:00am from the reception area of your hotel. If our drivers can't immediately see you they will ask the hotel staff to call your name. Ple [...]
