Monthly Round Up of Phuket News July 2022

The big Phuket news for July 2022 is the legalisation of cannabis. Laws are somewhat smokey but at the moment it’s a free for all. Weed shops are popping up everywhere at such a rate they may takeover 7-11. A clarification of the law will come soon but at the moment you can spark up a fat one without the fear of being arrested as long as your not in a public space.

Our dive boat is unfortunately a public space so smoking weed is not allowed on-board. Diving when stoned may sound like a great idea but you need to be thinking clearly so please refrain.

New Local Dive Thailand Shop In Patong

We’re finally seeing some light and the end of the ridiculously long covid tunnel so we’ve opened back up in Patong. Our sales centre is just off Bangla Rd along the beach road. You can find more information and location here – Local Dive Thailand Patong

July 2022 Dive Report

The diving this month got off to a pretty awful start, a storm with high winds hung around for a week and 1 trip had to be aborted after the first dive and a few redirected to the sheltered Racha islands.

Since then it’s been sunshine and low winds, visibility at the Racha’s has been amazing and the Phi Phi and King Cruiser days have improved greatly. Plenty of great sightings and happy guests.

Covid

The spectre that has haunted us for the last two years is finally no longer affecting normal life. No tests, special visas, insurance or mandatory reporting to health authorities are in place. Masks no longer have to be worn outside and in truth nobody has ever really worn them inside restaurant and bars. Airports and shopping malls are the only places you’ll need to wear them now.

World Drowning Prevention day

Learning to swim is a critical life skill if you live on an island. So the annual water safety education and training camp at Cape Panwa was again underway.

A total of 8,000 children have participated in the programme since 2004 and another 105 joined the camp to learn essential skills. Basic beach craft, swimming skills, venomous sea life treatments and a bit of surfing is all part of the curriculum.

New Water Park In Kathu

It’s been open since May but now we’ve had a few of our guests give us feedback. The general consensus is that it’s great! Plenty to do for both adults and children.

The Andamda Water Park covers just under 28 acres of lands with lots of rides. A 10,000 sm artificial sea than can simulate 3m waves, 3oom artificial beach and 12 different water slides are just some of the highlights.

The park is Thai themed so there’s plenty of opportunity to learn Thai culture and arts. At the moment you can buy tickets online for THB 550 (children) and THB 850 (adults). You can buy the tickets direct from their website – here

By Justin Hartrey

I've been enjoying the incredible marine life in our oceans for over 25 years. 13 years ago I became a PADI professional in Phuket, hoping to introduce as many people as possible to the incredible beauty of the seas.

Having been fortunate enough to dive all over south east and especially Thailand, I enjoy sharing my diving experiences and passion on this blog.

Originally from Bristol in the UK, I swapped the frigid waters of the North Atlantic for the warm tropical seas around Thailand and can confidently say that I wouldn't go back

Elephant Head Rock

Elephant Head Rock is a large rocky pinnacle that nestles between Similan Islands seven and eight. The strong current that runs between the two islands has smoothed the granite boulders on Elephant Head Rock and created lots of really nice swim-throughs. Although strong currents are frequently prevalent. The large size of the pinnacle ensures there is always a sheltered and safe area to dive. It's often the first dive of the day to allow d [...]

buoyancy control for new scuba divers Scuba Diving For Beginners

Improving Your Buoyancy Control

Some divers get diving immediately but not all. Students who are strong swimmers and confident in water tend to find the course easy and a whole lot of fun. This gives the opportunity to experiment and really get hold of buoyancy during the PADI Open Water Course. That's not the case for all new divers. Although you've successfully completed all the skills, had immense fun and opened up a whole new world, you still may not have quite gras [...]

Mimic Octopus In Phuket

Finding mimic octopus in Phuket is not a new thing for local divers but it may come as a bit of a surprise to holiday makers. Mimic octopus (thaumoctopus mimicus) are a relatively new species to science, only classified in 1998 from Indonesian specimens. The potential range could be huge because of the habitat they choose to hunt in. Featureless sandy/muddy flats is generally where you can find mimic octopus, not the first choice for most di [...]

Harlequin Shrimp – Thailand’s Cruel Crustacean

Sure harlequin shrimp are incredibly beautiful, a rare sight that excites guides as much as guests. However they do have a very macabre way of filling their little shrimpy bellies. They are reasonably frequent finds on our Phuket dive tours and have been spotted from the Racha's to Phi Phi. Harlequin shrimp are very difficult to find, it's usually just sheer luck but occasionally a maimed starfish or two can point you in the right direction. [...]
