Surin Island Dive Site Richelieu Rock

Richelieu Rock – Thailand’s Great All Rounder

Very few dive sites can match Richelieu Rock for variety, so much so that it can be a bit of a nightmare for photographers choosing which lens to take. On it's day regarded as one of the top ten dive sites in the world and is certainly the best in Thailand and allegedly 'discovered' by Jacques Cousteau with the help of local fisherman. There is much debate on how Richelieu Rock got it's name but it's nice to think that the great man had some involvement. Richelieu Rock is a horseshoe shaped rock that sits alone in the Andaman sea. It's nearly 20km from the Surin Islands and almost 40km from both the mainland and Koh Tachai so it's hardly surprising it attracts so much life. At high tide [...]

Similan Island Liveaboard MV Pawara Amazing Local Dives

Similan Island Liveaboard MV Pawara Songkran Trip Review

Liveaboards in the stunning Similan Islands National Park are rarely disappointing, especially on a great boat like MV Pawara. Occasionally bad weather or poor visibility can be a bit of a pain but fingers and any other available appendages were firmly crossed to ward off any bad luck. That appeared to be a waste of energy as rain greeted us on arrival to the boat... The pick ups from all over Phuket Island went smoothly and everybody had arrived by 8pm. Snacks and hot and cold drinks were immediately available for the weary travellers, some had come directly from the airport. All passengers were quickly allocated cabins and a boat and safety briefing was given in the saloon by the [...]

Cone Shell On The Hunt In Phuket Rare & Peculiar Critters

Why You Really Shouldn’t Pick Up Sea Shells In Phuket

If you want a souvenir from your scuba diving experience in Phuket then just taking photos is the only option you should be thinking about, picking up a seashell could land you in jail and if that shell is a cone shell then you could end up in more trouble - lots more trouble Being snails, unsurprisingly cone shells don't chase down their prey but sneak up on them when they're sleeping. They will bury themselves in the sand in the daytime and come out at night to hunt, this is when the nightmare begins. When the acute chemo receptors detect a fish, the snail will slowly stalk to within strike range of it's slumbering victim, extend it's proboscis and fire a venom covered harpoo [...]

Phuket Diving In Low Season Amazing Local Dives

Phuket Diving In Low Season

Phuket diving is fortunate enough to have an almost year round season - almost... Low season can produce the odd uncomfortable day but generally weather is pretty good in the day time with the wetter conditions coming in the evening but lets be honest as long as you can get in the water then it has to be a good day. Most days between May and October are hot and sunny just like the rest of the year and you have the added bonus of fewer divers on the boat. Our boat is comfortable when it's full but with occasionally just a handful of divers on-board it can feel quite luxurious and of course fewer divers topside results in fewer divers under the waves. The best side of Racha N [...]
