How Much Does Scuba Diving In Thailand Cost

The Cost of scuba diving in Thailand has many variables

The cost of scuba diving in Thailand will vary depending on location, type of dive centre and in some respects yourself. Phuket probably offers the best all round diving in Thailand but it’s also amongst the most expensive. It’s not simply that we think you should pay more for better diving, simply down to logistics.

Apart from a few really nice beach dives, most of our recognised dive sites are over an hour journey from port. You’ll find cheaper diving in places such as Koh Tao, the journey time to dive sites is only 20 minutes. So you can choose 1,2 or three dives. With us it’s a full day with three dives, although when you factor in breakfast, lunch and the amount of dives, you’ll find there’s not a great difference in price.

Phuket – 3 dives THB 3,700 (average) includes: equipment, pick up, breakfast, lunch, snacks, water, tea and coffee
Koh Tao – 3 dives THB 2,700 (average) includes, equipment, light snacks

Phuket does tend to have smaller groups, especially for courses. In Phuket the local laws dictate that only four divers can go with each guide. If you don’t mind large groups then Koh Tao might be the option for you and will save you money.

So Which Is Better?

It’s impossible to say that any of these two destinations is better than the other. Different divers have different needs, a full day out on the ocean in Phuket may suit some but others would prefer less time at sea in Koh Tao. If you’re torn between the two destinations then time of year could make your choice easy.

The best period for diving in Phuket is between November and May. We can dive all year around but we do expect better sea conditions during that period. Roughly the reverse is true for diving in the gulf of Thailand (Koh Tao, Koh Samui).

Liveaboard Options

Phuket is a way better option for liveaboards, both North and South Andaman offer exceptional diving. A 4 day/4 night trip can cost as little as THB 22,000 (US$ 700). The Similan and Surin Islands National Parks are widely considered the best diving in Thailand, Phuket being the ideal gateway.

You can also join a Myanmar liveaboard from Phuket, a fantastic location with lots of untapped potential.

Wherever you choose to go diving in Thailand, we’re confident you’ll have a great time and feel you received great value for money. Teaching standards are high and both PADI and SSI are well represented.

I've been enjoying the incredible marine life in our oceans for over 25 years. 13 years ago I became a PADI professional in Phuket, hoping to introduce as many people as possible to the incredible beauty of the seas.

Having been fortunate enough to dive all over south east and especially Thailand, I enjoy sharing my diving experiences and passion on this blog.

Originally from Bristol in the UK, I swapped the frigid waters of the North Atlantic for the warm tropical seas around Thailand and can confidently say that I wouldn't go back

How Does Maya Bay Closure Affect Divers?

Maya Bay is probably the most famous beach in Thailand, unfortunately it's become a victim of its own success. It's been 18 years since the release of the movie that brought Maya bay its fame but the popularity hasn't diminished. Thousands of tourists alight everyday to visit the stunning location portrayed in 'The Beach' but most leave a little disappointed. Maya Bay really wasn't recognisable from the movie because speedboats and lon [...]

Need To Know: Similan And Surin Islands New Rules

Similan and Surin Islands new rules bombshell dropped a few days before the annual reopening. The number of daily visitors has been reduced to 3,850 and divers to just 525. Possibly in reaction to somewhat unflattering images of thousands of tourists packed onto small Similan Island beaches. To ensure that no more divers than the allocated 525 per day enter Similan & Surin Island National Parks. Park tickets must be paid for in advance [...]
