Racha Noi – North Tip

Racha Noi – North Tip

A Stunning Phuket Diving Location

A picturesque little bay sits on the Northern most tip of Phuket’s Racha Noi island, granite boulders topped by lush tropical vegetation make a great setting for diving. Boulders reach out from the island on either side of the bay and continue underwater giving the dive site a ‘Similan Island’ feel.

The shallow area of the bay is composed of sand interspersed with small hard coral bommies, leaves from the island gather here attracting the perfectly camouflaged robust ghost pipefish at certain times of year. The hard coral reef gradually slopes to about 20m and is home to lots of reef fish, giant morays and octopus.

In the deeper areas along the granite boulders we can sometimes find small schools of chevron barracuda but do be careful as you reach the end of the boulders on either side, there can sometimes be a strong down current. Manta rays sometimes pass and kuhl’s stingray can usually be found feeding in the sandy areas at depth.

On the outside of the boulders there’s tonnes of robust and neon fusiliers and in amongst the boulders you can find mangrove snapper, oriental sweetlips, bluefin and giant trevally.

Overall a nice dive site with a chance of some bigger animals.

Great Weather For Phuket Scuba Diving The Archives

What Is The Best Time Of Year to Dive In Phuket?

We have two distinct scuba diving seasons in Phuket, imaginatively named low and high. The low season runs from mid May to mid October and high season the remainder of the year. The two seasons are governed by the monsoon winds that blow across South East Asia, it's fairly straightforward; in high season it blows from the east and low season from the west. Well lets start with the low season. The predominant west to east winds bring weather fronts from the Indian Ocean towards Phuket and with no other land mass for shelter it means that the swell on the sea is pretty much a permanent fixture during this period. I doesn't mean we can't go diving in fact it's very rare at any time o [...]

Lots Of Nudibranchs To Be Found When Scuba Diving In Phuket Rare & Peculiar Critters

A Little Help With Phuket Nudibranchs

These bizarre little creatures are on every Phuket diving site and most stand out like a sore thumb. It's not an animal that Phuket is renowned for so if you ask your guide what the sluggy looking thing that they pointed out was you may get nudibranch as an answer and if you question further you'll run into some well rehearsed diversion tactics. To be fair to us there are so many species it would be impossible to know them all, add to that the variations in the same species, the constant reclassification and that names can depend on which book you look in you can understand why giving positive ID's is generally given a wide birth. Scientists are mainly to blame for the confusion, cons [...]
