Racha Noi – North Tip

Racha Noi – North Tip

A Stunning Phuket Diving Location

A picturesque little bay sits on the Northern most tip of Phuket’s Racha Noi island, granite boulders topped by lush tropical vegetation make a great setting for diving. Boulders reach out from the island on either side of the bay and continue underwater giving the dive site a ‘Similan Island’ feel.

The shallow area of the bay is composed of sand interspersed with small hard coral bommies, leaves from the island gather here attracting the perfectly camouflaged robust ghost pipefish at certain times of year. The hard coral reef gradually slopes to about 20m and is home to lots of reef fish, giant morays and octopus.

In the deeper areas along the granite boulders we can sometimes find small schools of chevron barracuda but do be careful as you reach the end of the boulders on either side, there can sometimes be a strong down current. Manta rays sometimes pass and kuhl’s stingray can usually be found feeding in the sandy areas at depth.

On the outside of the boulders there’s tonnes of robust and neon fusiliers and in amongst the boulders you can find mangrove snapper, oriental sweetlips, bluefin and giant trevally.

Overall a nice dive site with a chance of some bigger animals.

Chevron Barracuda At West of Eden

West Of Eden

After the coral bleaching in 2010 that devastated the wonderful East Of Eden this rocky dive site became more popular. Most sites on the western side of the Similan Islands are comprised of granite boulders and hard corals which are a little more resilient to temperature change. Depending on the current the dive will begin around the mooring line in the small bay to the south of the dive site. It's worth spending some time in this area, look around the large coral bommie for giant frogfish, clown triggerfish and quite a few species of angelfish, it's not unusual to see regal, emperor, koran, bluering and masked angelfish in just the first few minutes of the dive. As you head [...]

What Are My Chances of Diving With A Manta Ray In Phuket?

Your first diving experience with a manta ray is something you'll never forget. In Phuket we're fortunate enough to get regular visits from these gentle giants, they can turn up virtually anywhere but we do have our favourite spots. Lets be clear, you have to be lucky on our local dive sites but it's by no means impossible. As I'm writing this the last week has produced four sightings all at our favoured spot. Racha Noi island has a manta ray cleaning station at the southern tip, this is a dive site but one we rarely visit due to the very strong currents but the other dive sites on the island get plenty of sightings as the mantas pass on their way to the south tip. They often swim int [...]

Hawksbill Sea Turtle Descending from the surface Rare & Peculiar Critters

Meet the Hawksbills of Phi Phi

Sea turtles make for lovely encounters underwater. In Phuket day trip destinations, the species you are most likely to see while diving is the Hawksbill turtle. The name Hawksbill comes from the narrow pointed beak that resembles a bird’s beak. An other distinctive feature is the overlapping scutes pattern on the carapace, giving serrated edges to the upper shell. Hawksbill turtles can grow up to about 115cm in shell length and nearly 70kg in weight. You may encounter Hawksbills in numerous Phuket diving destinations, with very good chances in dive sites around Koh Phi Phi Ley, Koh Bida Nok and Koh Bida Nai. Like other species of sea turtles, the Hawksbill is not bothered muc [...]
